National Parks

Towering stone arches. Spectacular mountain ranges. Erupting volcanoes and geysers. These are just a few of the incredible natural features you'll see at national parks. In this month's art box, kids will be creating art inspired by these stunning natural wonders.

This art box introduces kids to the wonder of the unexpected. They'll mix up paint using shaving cream and sand. They'll paint with sponges and a balloon. Mist, stars, rocks, and mountains will form as they work and explore these new materials. When they're ready to take a break from creating, they'll recharge with the perfect hiking snack—trail mix!

Activities in the National Parks Box:
Arches National Park Galaxyscape
This park is a “Dark Sky Park” making it the perfect place for stargazing! In this art piece, kids will imagine what it's like to sit beneath a rock arch and watch the Milky Way galaxy above. They'll mix up a unique sand paint to give the arch a rocky texture and they'll create the galaxy using sponge painting.

Layered Smoky Mountains Landscape
The Great Smoky Mountains sitting in a foggy mist is the inspiration for this piece. Kids will use a layering technique to create a mountain landscape. Then, they'll add a sheet of vellum on top to give the appearance of mist. Crinkle-cut trees are the finishing touch.

Old Faithful String Pull Craft
In this project, kids will create an artistic reproduction of this incredible hydrothermal feature in Yellowstone National Park. They'll cut, stamp, and glue as they piece it together. Plus, they'll create the erupting water in a really surprising way: with a painted string!

Volcanoes National Park Science Project
Science and art combine for this project inspired by Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii. First, kids will use shaving cream to paint a sky-blue background and clay to form a volcano. Then, the excitement soars as baking soda lava combines with vinegar to make the eruption!
