Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist who began his career as a woodblock printing apprentice and went on to create more than 30,000 pieces of art.

In this art box, kids will study Hokusai’s most famous artwork, The Great Wave, and several other pieces. They’ll jump into Japanese history to learn about the things that motivated Hokusai’s detailed artwork. In the first two projects, they’ll use Hokusai’s art as inspiration for creating their own reproductions. Then they’ll get a lesson in three printmaking methods and have the opportunity to practice each one on their own. For the final project, kids will get their hands on clay! They’ll shape a dragon and paint an ocean background with crashing waves.
