Leonardo da Vinci

This month’s My Artist Box celebrates Leonardo da Vinci, a man who was an engineer, an architect, a scientist, an inventor, and one of the most iconic artists of the Renaissance.

In this box, young artists will have the opportunity to create like never before! They’ll put a modern pop-art twist on Mona Lisa and turn crumpled paper into a reproduction of a page from Leonardo’s 500-year-old notebooks. Paper won’t be their only medium, though. They’ll mix up a plaster-like paste and try out the fresco technique. In the final project, they’ll use a mix of art and engineering skills as they piece together Leonardo’s self-supporting bridge.

Vitruvian Man Reproduction
This project combines brush painting and crumpled paper to achieve the weathered look of Leonardo's Vitruvian Man. Kids will get to pick multiple paint colors and layer it on the paper as they build the background. They'll finish by painting silhouettes of the Vitruvian Man.

Fresco Technique
It's time for kids to learn and practice a classic Renaissance technique! First, they'll get to mix up a plaster-like batter using cornstarch, glue, flour, and water. When it's nearly dry, they'll paint their masterpieces. They can gently crack the plaster in the final step to make the pieces look extra authentic!

da Vinci Bridge Diorama
Leonardo's 500-year-old bridge design is the star of this project. Kids will put on their engineering hats to build a mini-bridge out of craft sticks. They'll also paint and embellish a peaceful landscape where their bridge will sit.
