Hilma Af Klint

Meet Hilma af Klint, also known as the mother of abstraction! Even though she painted with this ground-breaking style starting in 1906 (five years before Kandinsky!), she was reluctant to show her work to the public. In 1986, her work was featured for the first time in a public art show, and she slowly became known as the true founder of abstract art. Her work is now displayed at the Guggenheim museum that attracts more than 1 million visitors every year!

With this art box, kids will learn about Hilma af Klint’s background in traditional art and see how her art career made a drastic change nine years after it began. Then, they will start studying Hilma’s most recognized pieces and make their own reproductions. Kids get to layer oil pastels, watercolors, wood, paper, and several other materials to create mixed-media pieces. There’s also an opportunity to practice automatic drawing and blindfolded drawing! The box wraps up with an abstract sculpture kids can build again and again!
