Jacob Lawrence

This edition of My Artist Box features Jacob Lawrence, an incredibly talented painter and one of the most prominent African American artists of all time. During his career, Lawrence broke several race-related barriers and painted pieces that depicted the lives of African Americans.

To start, children will learn about Lawrence's background and study a few of his most important paintings. After that, it's time to dig into the art supplies and start creating! Kids will channel Lawrence's cubism style to reproduce three of his paintings. They will layer shapes, add details, and work with a variety of materials. They will also put together a 3D diorama and practice perspective techniques.
