Margaret Macdonald

Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (1864-1933) was an Art Nouveau artist who branched off with her own techniques using fabric, watercolors, metalwork, and more. In this art box, kids will practice several different art techniques just like Margaret did in the early 1900s!

The box starts off with a look at Margaret’s art school experience and her collaborations with other artists. After that, kids will get busy making their own reproductions of two of Margaret’s most famous pieces. They’ll practice new watercolor techniques and use a variety of engaging materials like jewelry wire, salt, glitter, and beads. In the technique lesson, they’ll mix together their very own gesso mixture—that’s the plaster-like substance Margaret was known for using. The final piece is an embossed frame inspired by Margaret’s ornate metalwork.

Activities in the Margaret Macdonald Box:
The May Queen Reproduction
In this project, children will study Margaret's original artwork and see how it was perfectly designed to fit the tea room where it was displayed. Then they'll use tissue paper, jewelry wire, watercolors, and a few other fun supplies to create their own display piece.

The Sleeping Princess Reproduction
To recreate this panel inspired by Sleeping Beauty, young artists will first try out a wet-on-wet watercolor technique to paint a dreamy pond and a sleeping princess. They'll also get the chance to recreate Margaret's fluid lines of gesso with glue and add in sparkling beads and glitter for a final nod to her style.

Gesso Technique
Margaret's signature technique involved using a plaster-like substance called gesso. This project gives kids a chance to mix up their own gesso using cornstarch, baking powder, and mica powder! They'll apply it to two watercolor paintings using a piping bag—the same technique Margaret used more than one hundred years ago!

Metal Frame Diorama
Margaret's metalwork often appeared as part of furniture, but in this project, kids get to create a stand-alone frame to show off their metalwork! They'll use a type of embossing technique and aluminum foil to create a decorative frame that looks like it's from the early 1900s. Plus, the frame is a great way to show off a piece of their original artwork!
