Gustav Klimt

Born in 1862, Gustav Klimt was an incredibly talented artist who was never satisfied with the status quo. Even though he was one of the best artists in his class at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, he was never passionate about the classical style of the time. Instead, he broke away from the traditional artists in Vienna and created his own unique style that emphasized symbolism, gold materials, and an Art Nouveau style.

With the projects in this box, you will get a chance to create art like Klimt did during his Golden Period! First, have fun creating a mixed-media Tree of Life with sparkly gold paint, oil pastels, gems, and stickers. Then create a replica of The Kiss using gold paint, gold paper, and interesting patterns. Wrap it up and explore Gustav Klimt’s embossing and patterning techniques and create a mountain-side diorama!

Tree of Life Mixed-Media Reproduction
With this art project, create an art piece inspired by Klimt’s symbolistic Tree of Life painting. He used golden paint and colorful stones to create his masterpiece, and you will use those materials too! You will draw a tree in Art Nouveau style, paint it gold, and add vibrant colors with oil pastels, gems, buttons, and stickers.

The Kiss Mixed-Media Reproduction
Klimt’s The Kiss pairs a golden background with flowing figures of people in the foreground. Let’s use mixed-media techniques to paint your own background and fill the foreground with grass, flowers, and people. You can customize the people by gluing on the faces of your choice!

Patterns and Embossing Techniques
Klimt’s father worked as a gold engraver and that’s said to have been a major inspiration for Klimt during his Golden Period. In this project, you will emboss pieces of silver and copper foil. It’s a great opportunity to create unique and intricate patterns. Practice on paper first and then make your designs in the foil!
