Guan Daosheng

Experience the poetry, calligraphy, and paintings of the great Chinese artist Guan Daosheng in this My Artist Box! Children will learn about Daosheng's background and the factors that made her such a unique artist for her time. Young artists will have the opportunity to use a calligraphy paintbrush. They will also paint on handscrolls much like Daosheng did in the 1200s.

Children will see several bamboo paintings from Daosheng and make their own reproductions of these notable pieces. The box reinforces a variety of art techniques and includes various kid-friendly art materials like air-dry clay, tissue paper, raffia, calligraphy rice paper, and more.

Activities in the Guan Daosheng Box:
Ducks in Pond Scroll Reproduction
Instead of a canvas or watercolor paper, this painting is drawn on a handscroll! This is a very traditional way to display art in China—the painting tells a story as it's unrolled. Children will recreate Daosheng's minimalistic painting of natural elements in this reproduction.
